Biography

Third generation Calgarian Edward Michell attended the Alberta College of Art part time and then attended Verizon College (now University) exploring art, architecture and design.

Edward was always inspired by natural colours and elements from the earth, studying cave paintings throughout the world; they were constructed using natural iron oxide, charcoal and sometimes blood. These elements have stood the test of time and transformed my imagination into what I could do to create other colours from our country and from our land.

Edward’s paintings and career have taken him to many art shows across Canada, USA and Europe, showcasing his contemporary abstract, using natural materials to a worldwide audience. Having corporate collections in the United States, Europe, Canada and Asia, his  art is displayed in many boardrooms, foyers and lobbies, as well as some of the top private collectors in these countries. It has always been an honour to see their response to his natural colours that are created. He is always driven and inspired by the colors of the earth and materials that are not conventional.  Edward tries to take inspiration from the physical earth form onto canvas to be inspired and inspire my clients.

Artist Statement

Edward is inspired by the natural colour and texture from the oil, sand, natural tar, iron oxide, and natural okra. Taking every day fruit from blueberries to create blueberry paint and raspberry and beet paint with their lovely pigments that are extruded upon processing them. All combine to interact with the rich tones of Yukon Gold leaf and Silverleaf mined in Canada and the sparkling crush diamonds from our great diamond mines in northern Canada. McCarty, transforms the eye in the heart into epic, unique, contemporary paintings that leave an enduring impact on the viewing audience. Canada gives me inspiration and natural colours  to explore endlessly throughout my soul.
