Bio and Statement

Doug Levitt is an artist specializing in Alla Prima painting techniques. He is an avid En Plein Air painter and he loves to paint anything that visually grabs him. His passion for growing as an artist is his driving force.  This is what motivates him to paint such a diverse subject base. Since the pandemic, Doug has been focusing on Landscape paintings. Being able to be outside during that time not only helped Doug maintain his growth in art but also saved his sanity.

The Calgary Stampede selected Doug to paint the 2008 image for their promotional poster and the original painting, ‘A Man of His People’, auctioned for a record-breaking $63,000. Other awards Doug has garnered since then are 2 Artist Choice awards, 2 Collector choice awards, Juror Choice award and also the Outstanding Artistic Achievement Award from the Calgary Stampede Art show and 3rd place in the international Portrait Artists of America competition. Approach in art

Doug paints exclusively in the Alla Prima painting technique in oil. This is a process that involves no prep or underpainting. You just tackle the canvas with paint and try to finish a painting in one session as much as you are able. Doug believes this technique pushes his skill level as an artist more than any other approach does, and also allows for very improvisational brush styling and paint application. This gives Doug the painterly look he strives for.
