From July 8 to 11 the mini donkeys will be at the Calgary Stampede showing audiences their skills both indoors in the Northern Lights Arena, as well as in a new outdoor demo area next to the Agriculture Barns.
This year, they have brought a surprise guest: the newest member of their family.
Born on May 16 the baby girl is by far the youngest and smallest donkey to be attending this year’s Stampede. “She is a beautiful mahogany reddish brown, and is full of energy and curiosity” said Kelly McMullen.
She was 21 ½ inches and 19 pounds at birth, and is the fourth foal to her mother Circle C Raspberry Swirl, a seasoned competitor in halter, trail, jumping and pulling cart.
Her father, Valley Dawn’s Boston, is also a veteran competitor in halter and has recently started competing in trail classes.
Currently unnamed, the owners are accepting suggestions from Stampede goers, but with a brother named Double M Farms Dark Reno, those interested in naming the little girl should be prepared to get creative.
Anyone interested in meeting the foal is welcome to do so after the demonstrations, two or three times each day. All name suggestions will be accepted at the Miniature Donkey Showcase display until Monday, July 11.
The mini donkeys can be found in the Agriculture Building, north of the Victoria Pavilion.
