Mark Sutherland posted the fastest time Friday in opening-night chuckwagon action at the Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby. Prize money of $1.45 million is up for grabs this year.

Running in the fifth of nine heats, Sutherland made it around the track in 1:11.13.

 

Rounding out the top five were Mike Vigen’s wagon driven by his son Chanse, Vern Nolin, Kris Molle and Kurt Bensmiller. Racing continues Saturday at 8 p.m. and after eight days, the aggregate champion will be named. The winner receives a 2018 Sierra 3500HD SLT Crew Cab 4×4. The GMC Rangeland Derby is building towards the Sunday Showdown Final Heat, slated for July 15, which is worth $100,000 to the victor.
