Where can you watch four of Calgary’s top chefs demonstrate their skills and creativity in the kitchen?
In BMO Marketplace Hall A on the Kitchen Theatre stage you will find Calgary chefs Jan Hansen, Michel Nop, Daniel Pizarro, and Dustin Schafer competing for 2017 Top Stampede Dueling Chef. You have probably dined at their restaurants, come see how they create those wonderful dishes you have enjoyed so much.
The Dueling Chef judges include a who’s who of the Calgary restaurant scene: Chef Connie DeSousa, Charcut Roast House and Top Chef Canada finalist, Chef John Jackson Charcut Roast House, Executive Chef David Flegel, Hyatt Regency & 2016 Dueling Chef winner, Fabio Centini, Centini Restaurant and Lounge and Simon Dunn, Chef Instructor at SAIT. On Monday, July 10th celebrity chef Christine Cushing will be joining us on the judges’ panel.
Jan Hansen, Executive Chef at Hotel Arts Group has over 30 years of experience in the culinary industry. His high school teacher saw a glimmer of talent and encouraged him to pursue a culinary career. Jan’s culinary style draws inspiration not only from his European heritage, but also from the classical French cuisine and the influences of mentors throughout his career.
Avec Bistro Executive Chef Daniel Pizarro started his career as a line cook at the Blackfoot Inn. Like many Calgary chefs he attended the apprentice program at SAIT. He moved to Paris to attend Ferrandi, L’ecole Francaise de Gastronomi, later returning to Calgary with a passion for simple, hearty French cuisine. Daniel sources the very best ingredients to develop exquisite flavours and eye-catching presentation.
Dustin Schafer began his culinary career, like many do, as a dishwasher at Earls. He studied at SAIT, graduating from NAIT and upon returning to Calgary started working at Sky 360 as a sous chef. He is now Executive Chef at Modern Steak, bringing his expertise and passion for cooking to the reinvention of the steakhouse.
Michel Nop was born and raised in Paris, France and earned his red seal at 17 years of age. He has worked in Paris, London and fortunately for Calgary foodies he came to our city where he has worked at Cassis Bristro, Chefs Table and now Foreign Concept, where he is Sous Chef. In 2016 he took Bronze at the Calgary’s Gold Medal Plates competition.
The finale is Saturday, July 15th at 6PM where top Stampede Dueling Chef for 2017 will be determined. It’s always standing room only so get there early to watch the final two chefs battle it out.
