If you love the smell, taste and finger lickin’ goodness of barbecue, come on down to the BBQ on the Elbow happening at Community Park South today and tomorrow.
The event pits more than 20 competitive barbecue teams against one another for the title of best barbecue! The competition is judged and regulated by the Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) and challenges teams to deliver their best barbecued chicken, pork ribs, pork butt and brisket each within 30 minutes of one another.
“Today we’ve got toonie tastings from some of our competitors from 2 – 4:30 p.m., as well as the Midway food challenge,” says Ken Black, president of the BBQ on the Bow Society.”The real competition begins tomorrow and is pretty fierce as teams are challenged to turn in their best barbecued items every half an hour from noon – 1:30 p.m.”
It’s clear this competition isn’t for the faint of heart.
“All of our competitors take barbecue seriously and all of our judges are certified KCBS judges who follow specific criteria and complete a barbecue course,” he adds.
In addition to the toonie tastings, there is also free iced coffee courtesy of McDonald’s and a Heinz Ketchup photo booth.
“We hope everyone comes out and enjoys the experience of a real competitive barbecue competition and has a sample or two of some of the delicious barbecue our teams are serving up!” says Black.
