With Mother Nature insisting on winter the Calgary Stampede Heavy Horse Committee has been reminiscing about the 2013 show and thought we’d catch up with Josh Minshull. Josh is the General Manager of Express Clydesdales who was the winner of the 2013 Calgary Stampede World Champion Six Horse Hitch. We wondered what the winning six horse hitch had been up to since they won at the Calgary Stampede.
Josh let us know that the hitch has been on the road since we last saw them, they have participated in 77 events in 2013 and 2014 is shaping up to be just as busy. They have traveled anywhere from Toronto Ontario, Mesquite Texas, parades through Florida and everywhere in between. Express Clydesdales participates in exhibitions as well as competes in some prestigious draft horse events. Their six horse hitch of beautiful black Clydesdale geldings, who won at the Calgary Stampede, also took first at the North American Six-Horse Hitch Classic Series for the Clydesdale breed. They clearly have a winning hitch and are honored to win both titles.
We asked Josh about what he looks for in a great hitch horse, his thoughts were,
“It gets me excited when I see a horse with a great headset, lifting his feet, and when a horse who loves doing what he’s doing! That’s my favorite!”
Josh and his team pay special attention to all the Express geldings because every one of them plays a role in this winning hitch.
Speaking of down time, with 77 shows there likely isn’t much, however when we asked Josh what his team does to relax he let us know that there is a little bit of family time on the lake and in front of the BBQ. Its not all work for these World Champions.
The Calgary Stampede is looking forward to having Express Clydesdales back to the World Champion Six Horse Hitch when they can make it. And we cannot wait to crown the victor of the 2014 Calgary Stampede World Champion Six Horse Hitch.
