Calgary Stampede has a park-wide recycling program. One important component of the recycling program is “bedding waste” or “organics”. Bedding waste is managed program as part of our ISO:14001(Environmental Management System).
When animal stalls are cleaned after an event, the bedding waste is placed into a desiganted bedding waste container.
The bedding waste container is emptied into a designated composting area. The compost is then turned over, in order to properly aerate the waste. With so many equine animals on the park during Stampede, the amount of bedding waste we generate is fairly large.
We’re taking something that’s smelly, hard to landfill and turning it into a viable byproduct – compost . By doing this we help to reduce greenhouse gases, help eliminate byproduct stockpiling, prevent groundwater contamination and help with waste diversion.
However, Calgary Stampede is very successful on recycling its Bedding Waste and turning it into green gold.
