When it is freezing and snowing in Calgary, having a rodeo would not be the first thing that might come to mind, but for the Stampede bucking horses rodeo competition is in full swing. The all-star team of bucking horses made their way down to San Antonio and for the past 20 days they have been hotter than mid-July.
The highlight ride of the event for the Stampede came in the finals, when reigning World Champion Bareback Rider, Tim O’Connell, matched up with veteran stallion Special Delivery for a 91 point score in the final performance.
Not to be out done by her brother, Stampede Warrior ended up taking home the award for Top Saddle Bronc Horse of the San Antonio Rodeo.
The rodeo in San Antonio runs in a tournament-style format where competitors compete in brackets trying to qualify for the semifinal rounds and then move on to the final championship. In the championship round, the best compete for their share in the nearly $1.6 million dollar purse.
The bucking stock may not be competing for millions of dollars’ worth of prize money, but their role in the competition is worth 50% of the score–and the Stampede equine athletes matched up with two legged partners for seven go round wins between the Bareback and Saddle Bronc events.
With all of their hardware packed and the trucks loaded, the Stampede equine bucking team is heading to Houston to compete for the next three weeks. Stay tuned for updates on the horses and some of the great Canadian competitors that are vying for a piece of the $2 million purse. You can catch all the action nightly on the live stream here.
