A young cowboy from Siksika Nation captured a big win with a great ride, and the crowd’s hearts with a great interview yesterday in the Tier 2 division Jr. Steer Riding.
Ian Big Tobacco was the first winner to be crowned on stage at this year’s Calgary Stampede with his first ever Stampede victory.
In an effort to promote youth development in the sport of rodeo the Calgary Stampede has made a change to the Jr. Steer Riding competition this year. This year’s rodeo will see two tiers of steer riders who are separated by their age and riding experience. The two groups are then matched up with suitable cattle for their ability to ensure safe and fair competition for each competitor.
It was all smiles yesterday for the younger kids who qualified for the championship performance yesterday afternoon and the biggest smile of them all was from Ian Big Tobacco. With a score of 73 he took the lead and was able to hold off his five competitors to claim the victory.
“Calgary is a fun place to ride and it is an honor to win,” announced to 14-year-old champion while he was interviewed on stage after picking up his championship bronze in front of the 18,000 plus fans in attendance.
The Tier One riders will start today for their pool and face off in the championships on Friday afternoon. You can be rest assured they will be bringing their A game all week and these small cowboys and cowgirls will be putting on a big show.
