Calgary now exceeds one million people and the needs of the community are changing. More than ever, as our city grows, we need symbols and traditions that unite our citizens. The development of Stampede Park will continue to serve as a catalyst for great development of the surrounding inner-city neighbourhoods and will foster community values as our city grows and changes.
Stampede Park will become a year-round destination, attracting Calgarians and visitors from around the world to a unique western experience through festival space, shops, restaurants, and all kinds of entertainment. We will transform Stampede Park into a multi-use community park; a green oasis in the heart of the city.
As part of the development of a community space, the Olds College Calgary Campus was opened in 2006, and the new Stampede Casino, owned by an outside partner, opened in June 2008. Construction on the expansion of the Roundup Centre is underway and will be complete for the WorldSkills Competition in September 2009. Other recently announced projects include a new, state-of-the-art agriculture facility, and a major public art program.
Over the coming years, many other exciting changes will solidify Stampede Park as a vibrant gathering place for all Calgarians and their guests to enjoy. These plans will bring Calgarians new opportunities; whether for work or play. The Calgary Stampede is building a legacy that will benefit Calgary well into the next century.
